Making Hit & Miss – a HIT
A lot of the old hooked rugs we gravitate to have a common style – Hit and Miss. The early hookers used just about every and anything they could to make their rugs. They wasted nothing, yet created stunning primitive style folk art. In this workshop we’ll discover how easy it can be to use up some of the left over worms and wools we all have stashed away. Creating a personal and unique rug using up leftover wools in the style know as Hit & Miss.
Utilizing a pattern attributed to an early Shaker rug (American Hooked and Sewn Rugs by Joel and Kate Kopp, page 32), you’ll learn about different ways to approach the pattern using varying hit and miss techniques. We’ll discuss the use of color, value and contrast within the random and freeing hooking of hit and miss. Strip size isn’t a concern in this workshop. Every “worm” cut will work, and every color and wool is accepted. Bring your worms and small wool scraps to incorporate into the design.
We’ll hook a pattern I call Shaker Diamond, available in two sizes available. Small (12 x 28) or Large (18 x 45). I’ll also have both sizes hooked as examples and discussion, using different ways you can incorporate hit and miss. This rug pattern was created for the Rupp/Yeago book “Designs for Primitive Rug Hookers” through Rook Hooking about 10 years ago. Since then I’ve experimented a lot more with hit and miss and realize how the early hookers used it in their rugs. Plus, I’ll share what I’ve learned about hit and miss from Barb Carroll, Cynthia Norwood and others. And have examples of its use in my rugs – from a reproduction “Magdalena” to my own Federal Pineapple. I also plan to show a couple antique rugs that incorporate this beloved technique, along with printed examples to talk about.
For the workshop you’ll have your choice of either pattern size to work on in class. I’ll also have wools and worms galore for you to pick from as well. I encourage everyone to bring their own worms and scraps as well. The more the merrier. I’ve found that the larger the wool selection the more interest in the finished rug. With that said please don’t be worried about the idea of color planning. To get everyone started I’ll discuss options and then you’ll be off and running. This won’t be a class where I work with everyone individually. Once you make a couple decisions, you’ll find that the rug kind of happens on its own. Yep, it can be that free and easy. Come find out.
There’s one more thing to add for fun. I encourage everyone to bring a couple wools they will want to split and trade with others. For hit and miss we use lots of little pieces, so if you have a strip – say 4 inched by whatever length, we’ll cut it in half and trade with a neighbor. Like I said the more the merrier. (This trade is up you for participation and not required.)
There is a charge of $45.00 per person
patterns on linen are:
Small 28×12. $49
Med 44×18. $69
Plus any wools you may choose to purchase.
Keith started making rugs back in the 70’s with store bought punch needle rug kits. It wasn’t until the mid 90’s when he found his way to the more traditional style of rug hooking. As his knowledge of the craft grew, he realized the early primitive rugs were the ones he loved and wanted to emulate. Over the years he has pushed himself to achieve a primitive hooking style by attending workshops with many of the top teachers, I including Barbara Carroll – whom he is honored to call a good friend. Keith designs patterns available through The Woolley Fox/Nimble Thimble in Tyler, Texas. He’s been teaching locally in the southeast Michigan area and around the MidWest and East, venturing to the west for the ATHA biennial in Denver and the Seattle area in 2020.
Keith has a BFA in graphic design and works as an Art Director creating marketing materials for national clients. He took up weaving in the late ‘80s and continues to weave. His focus for the past 20 years or so has been with fiber arts, including hooking, weaving, knittings and even spinning. He attributes his interest in fiber to his grandfather – a tailor in Chicago during the first half of the last century.
